As human beings, we are complex – we simultaneously inhabit many different social locations, and when we come together to do engagement we all as individuals bring our own political, cultural, economic, subjective and experiential knowledge to the table. And sometimes the incredibly valuable experiential knowledge people bring to engagement can be intertwined with experiences of trauma. This is why it is so important to build engagement strategies that are trauma-informed from the very start, and that incorporate critical reflexive practice.

Carolyn Shimmin is the Patient and Public Engagement Lead at the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In this role, she oversees all patient, caregiver, family and community engagement in health research decision-making resources, programs and services. Carolyn is passionate about engagement that incorporates a trauma-informed and intersectional lens that is grounded in social justice and health equity. She has a bachelor combined honours in journalism and political science, a masters in gender studies and is currently a PhD candidate in community health sciences at the University of Manitoba.
