What’s the Certificate in P2 and how can I achieve it?

The Certificate in Public Participation is a certificate of completion awarded to participants who complete IAP2’s core training pathway. It provides a strong foundation in the principles, tools, and practices of effective public participation. It is designed for practitioners who want structured, practical training in engagement and participation. If you are looking to become certified as a Public Participation Professional, you would need to apply through the CP3 (Certified Public Participation Professional) program, which is a separate professional designation based on demonstrated experience and competency.

Program Structure:

If you are new to Public Participation, the pathway is taking the following courses:
  • Fundamentals of Public Participation and Engagement (Prerequisite for the other 2 courses) (7 hours)
  • Designing Public Participation and Engagement (14 hours)
  • Applying Methods (14 hours)

  • To earn a Certificate in P2, completion of the three courses is required.

    Duration and Learning Experience:

    The certificate program involves approximately 35 hours of immersive learning, providing participants with a robust understanding of public participation principles and techniques. Upon completion of the program, participants emerge with a profound sense of expertise in the field of public participation.

    If I completed the courses before 2022, what should I do to get my Certificate in P2?

    If you are interested in receiving the certificate, the pathway designed for those who have completed the Planning program is shorter and includes the following steps:

  • Send us your certificate for the Planning, and Techniques programs.
  • Register for the Applying Methods course. Please see the available options here.
  • Watch a video bridging both programs called the transition video. (this video will be sent to you upon registration to the Applying Methods course)
  • Participate in the Applying Method course.
  • What’s the difference between Certificate in P2 and the CP3 Designation?

    The Certificate in Public Participation is a training-based credential. A certificate of completion. It confirms that you have completed IAP2’s core learning pathway. The CP3 Designation (Certified Public Participation Professional) is a professional designation. It recognizes experienced practitioners who can demonstrate applied competence in public participation through an assessment process.
    In short:

  • Certificate = training completion
  • CP3 = professional competency recognition
  • I want to be certified as a Public Participation Professional. What should I do?

    To become a Certified Public Participation Professional (CP3), you must apply through the IAP2 Professional Certification program.
    This involves:

  • Completing the Certificate in P2.
  • Demonstrating your experience in public participation
  • Submitting an application
  • Completing a competency assessment

    Is there a discount for groups?

    Yes, we offer group discounts for organizations registering multiple participants in the same course. Please let us know how many participants you are looking to register for and for which course, and we’ll be happy to provide the details. You can contact us anytime through our Helpdesk.

    Can I get a copy of my certificate?

    Yes! We can issue copies of your certificates for completed courses. There is a small fee of $25 per certificate. Please contact us through the Helpdesk. to request a copy.Please add your full name, course name and year when you completed the course.

    How do I register for a course?

    You can register for courses directly through our website. Each course listing includes dates, locations, and detailed registration instructions. View available courses here.

    Do I need to be a member to take a course?

    Membership is not required to register for courses. However, IAP2 Canada members receive discounted training rates, so it can be a cost-saving option. Do you offer virtual and in-person training? Yes, most courses are available online. In-person courses are also offered when possible. The course listing specifies the delivery format.
