The effectiveness of public participation design and facilitation is dependent on real people engaging in real time, against the backdrop of real life. This candid, practical session will provide P2 practitioners with road-tested tips for building effective engagement with members of the public whose behaviour is challenging for a variety of reasons. When people, or the organizations they represent, are exhausted, distracted, irritable or entrenched, we need a deeper toolbox and a more flexible mindset to channel their attention productively. This course will provide both.

Following this session, participants will be able to:

  • Build empathy for participants in public engagement processes who appear to be too distracted, exhausted and/or belligerent to participate effectively.
  • Draw appropriately on a more extensive inventory of public participation design and facilitation tools to respond to difficult or unexpected behaviours in real-time.
  • Manage their personal state and mindset more effectively as a result of understanding how to strengthen their “adaptability quotient.”
PLEASE NOTE: If you are a member of IAP2 Canada please log into the website (top right-hand corner) to register automatically at the member rate. International IAP2 members require a code to register. Please contact info@iap2canada.ca to obtain it.
