Denver Encore: "Digital Engagement panel"

We kick off 2018 with our annual look at digital engagement, with four leaders in the industry taking part in a panel discussion. Dave Biggs (MetroQuest), Charles Connell (Social Pinpoint), Matthew Crozier (Bang the Table) and Joseph Thornley (76engage) shared their views on a variety of issues, including integration of digital and face-to-face, security, dealing with trolls and making a business case for digital engagement.

Matthew Crozier mentioned a document, outlining the business case for digital engagement: read it here.

You can find other examples of integrated engagement here:

2017 Core Values Awards - Project Categories

Catherine Rockandel of Rockandel and Associates in Vancouver won the IAP2 Canada award for "Respect for Diversity, Inclusion and Culture" for a project involving the Richmond School District and possible school closures. Compounding matters were a number of language barriers and new Canadians who came from cultures where governments and other official entities were not trusted. She was joined by Camille Morse Nicholson of the Jefferson Center in Minnesota, which held "Rural Climate Dialogues", which won the award for Creativity and Innovation for bringing rural communities together to discuss climate change problems and solutions. These communities had long felt locked out of the conversation by urban and suburban interests.

2017 Core Values Awards - Project Categories, Part 2

Beringia Community Planning and the Liard Aboriginal Women's Society (LAWS) received the IAP2 Canada award for Indigenous Engagement for "Youth4Safety", a project to address a growing problem of sexualized violence against Indigenous women and girls. Sarah Gillett of Beringia discusses how they engaged Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people. The Tennessee Department of Transportation took it to the people to determine how best to address a $10-billion backlog in infrastructure projects, and their engagement proved so influential that Gov. Bill Haslam got involved in the later stages. TDOT's Director of Long-Range Planning, Tanisha Hall, and consultant Preston Elliott discuss the methods they used to reach as broad a cross-section as possible.

Denver Encore: "Our Community Could Blow Up. Do We Have Time For Some Quick Consultation?"

In October, 2012, in Minden, Louisiana, something went "BOOM!" in the night. Was it aliens? Fracking? A supersonic boom from Barksdale? It was part of a cache of millions of pounds of aging and unstable explosives, stored at the US Army Camp Minden. And there was a lot more, stored illegally and unsafely. The Environmental Protection Agency was called in and determined to go with "Best Practice" -- open burning. This time, the fireworks came from the community, concerned about more explosions, pollution from the burn and a number of other down-sides. Kristi Celico and Doug Sarno, MCP3, were called in to facilitate a process that brought together technical experts and the community to come up with their own Best Practice.

Denver Encore: "Beyond Inclusion"

Portland, Oregon, claims the dubious history of white supremacy dating back over 100 years. That, according to the Momentum Alliance -- a youth-led group that works for social justice -- has resonated into the 21st Century with policies and procedures that put communities of colour at a disadvantage. Metro, the regional government that oversees cross-county operations in the three counties surrounding the Rose City, recently teamed up with MA to develop a strategy for achieving diversity and racial equality.

Denver Encore: "Participatory Systems Change"

Finding tools and techniques to reach out to a broad spectrum of the public is one thing, but achieving that marriage of public involvement and the intricacies and complexities of government and bureaucracy is a delicate balance. In this reprise of one of the sessions at the 2017 IAP2 North American Conference, David Kahane of the University of Alberta, Martin Carcasson of the Center for Public Deliberation at Colorado State University and Robin Prest of the Morris Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University discuss some of the insights presented at a 2016 conference of "thought leaders".

Download the PowerPoint deck here.

Some of the resources mentioned are at the end of the PowerPoint: one to note is Donella Meadows' "Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System". And the full Participatory Systems Change report can be found here.

"Public Transportation & Public Participation"

Three situations - three opportunities to engage the public in transportation issues. In Metro Vancouver, TransLink consulted with the public in a two-year process to revise its antiquated fare structure. In Minneapolis, residents in communities of color worked together to ensure equity along a transportation corridor through the northwestern suburbs. And in Atlanta GA, the MARTA Army works with the regional transportation authority to enhance customer service.

"Building P2 Into Your Organization"

As many of us have found out, getting an organization to buy into the concept of public engagement requires a culture shift. Sometimes, it takes a disastrous experience to force that shift. Two organizations share their experiences: the City of Edmonton (IAP2 2018 Canada Organization of the Year) and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (IAP2 USA 2017 Organization of the year.

Victoria Encore: "Prevent Truth Decay"

A study by the Rand Corporation earlier in 2018 looked at the erosion of civil discourse and trust in institutions and the decline in reliance on truth and facts in general. In this webinar, Sam Imperati and Devin Howington reprise their presentation from the 2018 IAP2 North American Conference in Victoria, going into the psychology behind truth and the role a P2 practitioner has in keeping truth front and centre in a process.

Taster Series: "Facilitation Agility - Off the Rails but Still On Track"

Sooner or later, it's likely that you will be facilitating a process that comes completely awry -- people are angry, someone says the wrong thing, people show up looking for a platform rather than a conversation. You need to be able to think on your feet and keep control of the situation. Rebecca Sutherns of Sage Solutions teaches courses in just this sort of thing and shares some of her expertise in this most recent Taster.
